A trend describes the general direction in which a stock or market is moving over a defined period of time. An uptrend is characterized by a series of higher highs and higher lows – the price consistently reaches new peaks while pullbacks remain shallow. A downtrend shows the opposite pattern: lower highs and lower lows indicate that sellers are in control. Identifying the prevailing trend is the foundation of any technical analysis approach.

A strong trend is one that persists over multiple sessions without significant interruption. Key signs of trend strength include consistently increasing momentum values day over day, a clear separation between the current price and its moving averages, and sustained directional movement without frequent reversals. On this page, the momentum table highlights symbols where the rate of change has been rising or falling continuously over the last 10 trading sessions – a direct measure of trend intensity.

The momentum values shown in the table represent the daily rate of change of a smoothed moving average. A positive value means the average is accelerating upward – buying pressure is building. A negative value means the average is declining – selling pressure dominates. The further the value is from zero, the stronger the current trend impulse.

Performance measures how much a stock has gained or lost over a fixed period such as 1 month, 3 months, or year-to-date – it is a backward-looking percentage. Momentum, by contrast, measures the rate of change right now – how fast and consistently a trend is developing day by day. A stock can have strong recent performance but weakening momentum, which may signal that the move is losing energy. Used together, both views give a more complete picture of a stock's current condition.

The data is updated once per day after market close, using end-of-day prices. This makes it ideal for trend traders and swing traders who make decisions based on daily charts rather than intraday noise. The 10-session momentum view shows whether a trend is building, flattening, or reversing – exactly the information needed to time entries and exits on a daily timeframe.

A trend reversal signal appears when momentum is consistently moving toward zero while still on the same side – for example, a positive momentum value that has been declining for several days and is approaching the zero line. This pattern suggests the current trend is losing energy and may be about to change direction. It is not a confirmed reversal, but a warning sign worth monitoring in the following sessions.
